Sleep has eluded me for most of my life.
As a child in Korea, halmoni would lament that I never got tired and would stay up late to be with the adults.  I was always afraid I might miss something significant.  History was unfolding before me and I needed to witness.
After my adoption, I slept fitfully, [...]

No Homo

My students have two phrases they love to use:
“No Homo” and “Real Talk”
I pretty much ignore these things as boys experimenting with language they hear on the radio (which would fit nicely with my argument against misogynistic language in hip hop).  I generally wonder why they say “No Homo” in preface [...]

Brainwashed Women

That’s right! From the victims of my previous blog post, the makers have outdone themselves by giving us the Top 10 Ways Men Have Brainwashed Women.
Firstly, let me say that this idea is pretty hilarious.  I mean, after all.  Just about everything we men do is to get women to like them.  Therefore, if we [...]

Bad Relationship Advice

A so-called men’s website spouted off the top 10 ways to keep a relationship interesting.  I’m always amused at these relationship advice columns because they always seem to lack something like, oh, real world practicality? This was given to me matter-of-fact during my nightly visit to help with homework, playtime, or just lounge time.
His name is “D”.  He has light brown hair, fair skin, and according to Noodle’s mother who met him already, “he’s cute.”
Apparently, she has good taste.  Noodle’s mother also met the father, who noted that [...]

Diversity

Wouldn’t it be great to use Google maps to figure out how “ethnic” your neighborhood is?
Using my mad Asian skills, I discovered that within the 2 mile radius of my home I have 20 Asian restuarants or markets (not including Pei Wei).  Yet, I only have about three Latin / Hispanic restaurants (not including Chipotle, [...]

Overheard in my classroom

We read an excerpt of Alexander Pope’s The Rape of the Lock today and look what chaos ensued when I set the high school seniors free to complete their questions and assignments.
Conversation #1
Student #1 – I think he tried to rape her.
Student #2 – No, he tried to rape her hair.
Student #1 – Oh yeah, [...]
